Ken - Thanks for the info. John spelled his name both ways as did his siblings, but the final name of all of the family per gravesites is Uptain. I show born in Tuscaloosa County but have nothing but rumor to indicate that. I did not know that Jasper was in same unit. My ggrandmother indicated that her father came back "changed" by the war (as I am sure everyone did) but his nickname became "Hellfire" if that indicates anything. In fact, my dad never knew him by any other name until Dad was in his 70's and I started researching our history. Only a few people that are still around knew his real name and one of those was the daughter of the lady that delivered my father and a neighbor. She is in her 90's now.
