The Federal dead was buried in shallow mass graves, drug to gullies and had dirt thrown over them, not buried at all and had the dirt around them put on top of them, and some were just left there. A few months after the battle when union forces came back to the battlefield they found that hogs and other animals had dug into the graves and bones were scattered everywhere. THe union forces then began to take the bodies back to what becomes the National Cemetery in Chattanooga.
