On Nov. 25, 1863, the 36th and 38th Alabama Regiments were stationed at Rossville Gap on the southern end of the Confederate line along Missionary Ridge. Both were overwhelmed by attacks from the front, left and rear of their position and significant numbers captured. Nearly all Confederate prisoners taken during the fighting around Chattanooga were sent via Louisville KY to the new prisoner-of-war camp at Rock Island IL.
