Corrine --

The law of Feb. 17, 1864, created both Junior and Senior Reserves, so the company enrolled by Capt. Truss could not have been organized for reserve duty. Its dtae of organization was Sept. 4, 1863. Senior Reserves were men between the ages of forty-five and fifty, so Lewis would have been just under the age to qualify. If I understand, he would not have been forty-five until 1866.

Barbiere’s Cavalry Battalion organized in Oct. 1864 with six companies from the supporting forces of the Conscript Bureau. This informal association took place at General Clanton’s camp, seven miles south of Talladega AL Also called Davenport’s Battalion, the command appears in the records with the reserve forces of Alabama, despite being composed of conscripts and exempts. Officers and men had enrolled for three years or the war, and many had been serving under Barbiere as enrolling officer of the 4th Congressional District of Alabama for at least a year.
