Re: 1st Alabama Reserves - My Great Grandpa

Melissa --

No images of prisoners-of-war at Ship Island are known to exist. Known as the 1st Alabama Reserves through most of its brief career, officers and men surrendered as the 62nd Alabama Regiment.

Most of the regiment was captured at Blakely, Ala., Apr. 9, 1865, and sent to Ship Island. Prisoners were transferred from Ship Island to New Orleans on Apr. 28, 1865, and forwarded to Vicksburg, Miss., three days later. Officers and men were paroled on the Big Black River on May 6, 1865. They surrendered along with other survivors of the command at Meridian, Miss., May 11, 1865.
