That was in fact the case. Colonel Hobson was in command of the Brigade, Captain Riley was in command of the Regiment. I have a list of 51 men from the 5th Alabama Infantry Regiment that surrendered at Appomattox Court House. Several of the men had been on detailed duty with the Division, Brigade, or assigned as Teamsters, Ambulance Drivers, etc.

143 men had been wounded or captured a week earlier at Petersburg, so the regiment had just over 200 men in the trenches at Petersburg in the spring of 1865.
