Thanks for your response. If you can tell us where "home" was for John J. Allen, it might be possible to identify his regiment and learn more about him. In 1860 there were at least thirty men living in Alabama named John Allen who could have served in the Confederate army. You didn't mention Alabama, so he could be from another state.
