Re: "Sipsey Independents" - 41st Alabama Regt.
Regarding the Cabaniss members you speak of, Obidiah was shot as the result of Court Martial in Peterburg Va after switching sides a couple of times. His brother Madison was a part of the 1st Alabama Calvary USA off and on and probably had some influence on him switching. He got caught somewhere and was recognized for some of the things he had in his possession, thus taken to Petersburg and tried, found guilty and shot. M.T. Cabaniss, my GGGrandfather was at home AWOL we think with his brother Alexander Charles Cabaniss, when either some home guard unit or regular calvary unit got word and jumped him at his home in Echola Alabama where he was shot in his front yard. He had another brother Rasmus who had enlisted later and was scheduled to join another Alabama unit, but because of a measles outbreak in Tuscaloosa, he was delayed and ultimately was mustered into a Tennessee Confederate unit. Rasmus died in Camp Abbingdon Tenn just to the Southeast of Memphis probably before engaging in any combat. Alexander Charles Cabaniss was the only one of the three brothers to survive and he was captured and shipped up North to a POW camp for the rest of the war. He married a Delaware girl after the war, Mary Pyle, and moved to the Savannah Ga. area where he died in 1917. I don't find any linkage to either Wylie or Bailey you mention as far as kin relationship. Let me know if I can provide you other info. Are you related to the Cabaniss' in any way?
