Re: A. A. Carter, Co. E, 1st Regiment

Alexander Aulcey Carter is my great grandfather. He was born 23 Dec. 1834 in Henry County, Alabama, the son of James Carter (originally from North Carolina). He died 26 Feb. 1905 in Hillsboro, Hill County, Texas. I have done research on his military service with minimal success. I do know that his mother was a Reece and I believe there was a Col. named Reece in the 1st Alabama. I seem to recall some confusion about which company he was in. We cannot locate his military service records but we do have statements from those who knew him during the war and attest to his service. He had brothers in the war but not in the 1st. One brother John was seriously wounded. Family lore has it that Alexander Aulcey was a Capt. or Lt. and was in the Cav. Also that he was pursued by federals after the war who wanted to kill him. He moved to Mississippi and then to Texas where he spent the rest of his life. He was a successful rancher and farmer. His name is used in many ways. He is referred to by family as "Alex" many called him Aulcey. His first name was Alexander but he seldom went by that name. He was thin, tall and had piercing bule eyes. He had a large family and his wife was Bernettie Hannah Pulliam. He had a son that he named Aulcey A. Carter and some confuse him with his son.
