Alan makes good points on this subject. One of my great-great grandfathers (B. M. Garrett) owned 454 acres, and had 11 slaves in 1860 in Randolph Co., GA. He had 17 children, so there were 19 people in the family. Five of his sons served in the CS army and were still living on, or next to, his land. So, only one of 19 were listed as owning slaves, but all benefitted from them.
