Terry --

Nicely done -- wish I could add more to your work. The only significant correction will be your reference to Lieutenant Pointer's capture by the 10th Iowa Cavalry. The highest numbered cavalry regiment from that state was the 9th Iowa Cavalry. Pointer was captured in one of the skirmishes involved in Col. William J. Palmer's raid, which began at Decatur on Dec. 28, 1864, concluding with the capture and destruction of Hood's wagon trains near the Mississippi state line. Here are skirmishes for the 15th Pennsylvania Cavalry recorded for that regiment in Dyer's Compendium --

  • Near Decatur, Ala., December 28.
  • Pond Springs, December 29.
  • Near Leighton, December 30.
  • Russellville, December 31.
  • Nauvoo, Ala., January 2.
  • Thorn Hill, January 3.

Perhaps you meant the 10th Indiana Cavalry, a small detachment of which rode with Palmer into North Alabama. Although not large at all, just a few hundred mounted men, Palmer's command did far more damage that its small numbers might suggest. In addition, Palmer returned to northeast Alabama to assist in the pursuit and capture of Brig. Gen. Lyons near Warrenton and Red Hill, Jan. 14-15, 1865.

The 12th Alabama Partisan Ranger Battalion organized with six companies at Falkville AL on July 26, 1862. About Nov. 28, 1862, General Bragg ordered this battalion to be consolidated with the 1st Alabama Cavalry Regiment. These six companies formed part of that command until reconstituted as the 12th Alabama Cavalry Battalion on March 1, 1864, all companies resuming original letter designations. By Nov. 7, 1864, four other companies had been assigned, increasing the battalion to a regiment known as the 12th Alabama Cavalry.

The identities of three of the four captains leading the additional companies are known. These are --

  • Capt. W. T. Lakey, Calhoun County AL, formerly assigned to the 1st Alabama Cavalry

  • Capt. Charles O. Shepherd, Madison County AL, formerly serving on conscript duty

  • Capt. Calvin F. Sanders, "Buckner Guards", formerly escort for General Cleburne

I have no idea as to who "Captain McKinney" might have been. Willis Brewer lists this company as being from Georgia. Anyone's reasonable suggestions as to the identity of McKinney or his company are welcome.
