Company "G" was Captain Lakey's command from Calhoun County. Since we're searching for a company commander, G. W. McKinney won't matter since he served as an enlisted man.

A search of this name among Georgia cavalry units turns up Capt. Francis M. McKinney, 1st Georgia Cavalry Reserves. His company entered service in the Supporting Forces of Georgia at Butler GA, Jan. 19, 1864. This was a company recruited for duty with the Conscript Bureau, just like Capt. Shepherd's company, on conscript duty in Alabama. This may be the right one. However, it appears that this company never reported to the 12th Alabama Cavalry, Capt. McKinney being present wth his company at Macon GA, Nov. 14, 1864, no transfer or reassignment mentioned.
