Mr Ford, you have maligned and libeled the good name of your confederate ancestor. Everything I find on this man speaks of his good character. I haven't seen him refered to as Captain but often is called Squire. This would be due to his being appointed Justice of the Peace by Governor (Col) Oates. Available from the Cherokee County Library are compilations of the Coosa River News and in the 1882-1894 edition you will find the article. There was an inquest, your statement about Edges ties totally inappropiate. This is not the sort of thing that board is for and may be deleted. 6 good and lawful men found the the death was justifable. After shooting him Edge took him into his house, sent for a doctor and cared for him the last two hours of his life.
Ms Lowery, my compliments to you on your research. I do not think that the Wm Edge in the 5th SC is this William. From the esteem he seems to have held with his compatriots I don't think there can be any doubt that he was with Macbeth's. Records or not, the old vets knew more than we ever will.

Deo Vindice
