The Alabama in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Collateral Ancestors
In Response To: Collateral Ancestors ()

While none of my soldiers are my direct ancestors, I am researching all the men that share my maiden name, Wigginton (various and numerous spellings!). Among Wigginton genealogists, it is generally believed that most of the Wiggintons in the USA are tied together somewhere along the line.

I have been working on this project for almost 3 years now and my list currently numbers around 140 men. My line traces back to Virginia and another line went further south into Mississippi, Georgia, Alabama so I'm not surprised that roughly 75% fought for the CSA. I have an incredible cross section of men that represent 18 different states, as well as some who fought with Native American (CSA) and Colored Troops. I also have a guerrilla who fought alongside William Quantrill, the Youngers, and James's in Missouri. Some of the approximate 25% Union men were with the 1st AL Cavalry with the Union. That to me was one of the biggest surprises.

It has been an extremely fascinating project and many of these message boards have been extremely helpful. I would love to share more of my discoveries with anyone who's interested in hearing more.
