I'm looking for any claims to be the first Alabama casualty (or casualties) during the Civil War -- and I'm willing to extend the definition of "war" to include the pre-war occupation of coastal forts or the capture of the Mt. Vernon Arsenal, etc., or to an actual wartime battle. Dates, locations, units, circumstances would be useful. I would also like the source of the information (bibliographical citation or other verification). I am looking for casualties that resulted in a death, not just a wound or illness from which the soldier recovered; where burial sites are known, that would be useful information as well.
