RE: Alan Pitts

Thank you Alan for causing me to have to organize my records a little. I do have Joe Reeds records from micro film records at the Huntsville Public Library with muster rolls going back to his enlistment Apr 29, 1862. An interesting typed record found among his files says that he appears on a list of wounded in Taliaferro's Brigade. Under List dated it says Camp near Snickers Neck Jan 16, 1863. Where....Manassas.....Remarks wounded. I know Joe carried a lot of shell and shrapnel to his grave. In his pension request 1907 the examiner states minus his left leg but was shot through the joint of his right knee also shot through right hip. grape shot broke two ribs in his right side. I think these were wounds from Manassas
Among these record I have a document that says his leg was amputated above the knee by Surg Westmoreland as you stated but that the date of operation was Nov 13, 1863 at Stuart Hospital. I ask these questions because it goes with family lore that his leg was indeed amputated in Atlanta. Interestingly the lore goes on to say the leg is encased in the cornerstone of some downtown bank which makes me wonder if there was some sort of dumping ground where the limbs may have been dumped and later given some sort of ceremonial burial.
In his Certificate for Retirement I see under where sent A.A. and what looks like a G. Is this how you deduced he was assigned to Gadsden.
Seems like I was a wee lad when you first started putting me on the path of the true history and my thanks go out to you and Jim for all the info you have provided over the years. My 1st postings 7 or 8 years ago were looking for info on Joe has some Cherokee Co books say he was in the 19th Al and that he served under Joe Wheeler. I think now that the Wheeler misconception had something to do with the battle of Lookout Valley. So much is lost and becomes out of focus over time and it doesn't help when people just fill in gaps
