Re: CSA Special Order Numbers 283 & 285

Alan,

Sorry that I missed your answer to my query back in January...just now found it. As you know, I am researching Co. I, 9th Alabama Inf. and I have a list of some 13 men in the company who enlisted in 1863 at Orange court House, Virginia, with no pay in company. About 11 of them deserted in Jan. and Feb. of 1864, at Orange Court House. Their service records only say that they were enlisted under Special Order 283, 284, or 285. David Hughes and J. K. Kimbrough were the names of two of the soldiers.

One of the men in Co. I, 9th Alabama, Benjamin Thomas Clemmons, was detailed to Richmond as a "line Marker". Do you have any idea what his job would have been?

Thanks for any help.
