Two questions answered. The rails taken up between Pensacola and Pollard definitely went to the Alabama and Mississippi River Railroad. The gap in the railroad was connected by water between Demopolis and McDowell's Bluff (McDowell's) landing. The distance is mentioned as being four miles in one letter and five miles in another. The unanswered questions are, when did they switch from unloading and loading the cargo for water transport and begin the use of a barge or ferry or did this ever happen? If this did happen, how did the barge system work? Help us Paul Harvey!
