I will contact him next week to see what he thinks. I still suspect that there was a train ferry for the 4-5 mile trip down river. Trian ferrys were not that uncommon and had been in use for several decades before the war. It is amazing how much was shipped through and from Alabama. Even the powder for the guns that fired on Ft. Sumter was shipped from Pensacola through Alabama to Charleston.
