Ken --

Can't answer questions concerning the sentence by court martail, but Barksdale was hired as a substitute. Barksdale lived in Laurens Dist SC, was forty-three when enlisted on July 12, 1862, Richmond VA. The soldier who hired him was Timothy Walton of Perry County AL, a member of Co. "D". Barksdale spent most of his time in various hospitals or absent without leave. On May 5, 1863, he managed to lose his Enfield near Suffolk VA.

This information comes from Barksdale's and Walton's service files.
