Finally talked to David Bright concerning the gap in the Alabama Mississippi Rivers Railroad at Demopolis. He said that he has been asked that question before (unloading the cars versus transferring the cars) and that he does not have an answer. Like Alan he can't imagine that the cars were placed on vessels and I can either. The description that I vaguely remember was more of a barge system that steam vessels pushed like they do today. He said that might be a possibility. This may be something that was contemplated but never came to be. I simply don't know. Perhaps someday I will remember the source. I do know that it had to do with the removal of track from Pensacola to Pollard and the use of those rails on the Alabama Mississippi Rivers Railroad. I'm not one to surmise so unless I find something concrete one way or the other, thats all for now.
