Near Dalton, Georgia December 17, 1863 he tendered his resignation " . . . on the ground of physical disability to perform the duties of my Office in the field.

"Previous disease having so much impaired my system, leaving me the subject of Chronic Rheumatism and Neuralgia. The loss of my nervous system . . . " , etc.
