Winston County Rough and Ready Volunteers

Early in 1860, the Alabama Legislature passed an Act to Provide For An Efficient Military Organization of the State of Alabama. The Act was approved 24 Feb 1860 and a circular was sent to each county in the state ordering the organization of local militia groups. The drumbeats of war were already being heard across the Southland and Alabama was getting prepared a full year before the State seceded from the Union by recruiting and training volunteers for the defense of the State. Many of these Winston County volunteers would soon join regular Confederate Army units, while at least one joined the 1st Alabama Cavalry. Still others seemed to disappear from the scene. Most of the names making up this list can be found on the 1860 Winston County Federal Census.

The list come from correspondence to the Governor of Alabama, A.B. Moore and were found in the State Archives in Box SG024932, Folder 67. Microfilm of these records were reviewed at Wallace State Junior College at Hanceville. Most counties in the State had similar correspondence with the Governor’s Office. Once the volunteers were organized and officers elected, the Governor issued official recognition and appropriate military commissions.
