There was no fighting at Choctaw Bluff and no Federal raid into this part of Alabama during the Civil War. Local newspapers mention recruiting slaves for labor at these forts but nothing more. Since his death cannot be the result of hostile action, it's much more likely that Vines died of disease. Probate papers filed by Mrs. Vines are found in the soldier's military service file.
