The Alabama in the Civil War Message Board

Cadmus M. Wilcox

In July 1864 Gen. Wilcox commanded one of the divisions in Hill's III Corps. However, two of his brigades (Lane's and McGowan's) were transferred north of the James and placed under Gen. Connor. His other two brigades (Scales and Thomas) were sent to Bermuda Hundred.

The situation lasted until the third week in August when Warren's and Hancock's attacks on the Weldon Railroad resulted in the recall of the four brigades.

Wilcox seems to have remained at Petersburg during July and most of August.

My questions are:

1. What was his status? Did he actually command any troops during this period?

2. Was the transfer of his four brigades meant as a punishment?
