There was never a strict segregation of commands. Units organized as partisan rangers served with cavalry commands, and vice-versa. For instance, companies of the 12th Alabama P.R. Battn. were consolidated as part of the 1st Alabama Cavalry Regiment from November 1862 until March 1864. The Partisan Ranger Act was primarily a tool used to promote recruiting during a time in which it had become difficult.
