It looks like he must of contracted some form of swamp fever, which must of eventually killed him, for him to be exempted from further duty, and the fact Hannah received a pension so quickly. Did you see, on the 1870 census that 2 of his brothers and a sister were classified as "idiots". Further proof First cousins shouldn't marry.
