The Alabama in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Prattville Dragoons uniform

Easy answer.

Until they entered Confederate service, the standard uniform for AVC companies like the "Prattville Dragoons" was the one prescribed by the State of Alabama. The AVC law stated that companies that had been chartered by the state prior to passage of the law could retain their old uniforms. This would have covered only a half dozen or so companies like the Montgomery "True Blues". Most of the early Confederate companies organized in Alabama belonged to the AVC.

This company organized as the "Prattville Guards" on Feb. 22, 1861, Capt. Samuel D. Oliver. It reorganized as the "Prattville Dragoons" on April 29, 1861, Capt. Jesse J. Cox, entering Confederate service on May 3, 1861.
