The Alabama in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Prattville Dragoons uniform

I'm a little bothered with my answer last night, specifically thinking about the "Auburn Guards" and the image of AVC officers (Capers and Dixon). The AG wasn't one of the older companies chartered by the legislature some years earlier.

A quick check shows the Auburn Guards belonging to a large group of companies that petitioned the legislature for charters immediately after the attack on Harpers Ferry. These are listed in Acts of Alabama, 1859-60, pages 147-150. Most of them joined the AVC a few weeks later, but were allowed to keep uniforms already furnished.

The only company from Autuaga County to be admitted in this early group was the "Prattville Grays", Capt. William H. Northington, chartered on Feb. 21, 1860.
