Ascerbus' first name was apparently a challenge. I have found old court records that simply refer to him as A. Brooking. Where Asthols came from, I don't know.
I finally found his grave in Oakwood Cemetery, Richmond, Virginia, where he is listed as A. Brookling. He died of measles, as did his brother, James C. Brooking, Co F., 44th Georgia Infantry. He only lasted three months. Rural dwellers didn't have much immunity and measles was as deadly to them as it was earlier to the American Indians.
