My grandmother, Era Exie Smith Herring (b 1898, d 1975) told me that her mother's father, John Thornton, fought for the CSA.
His middle name may have been "Evon." I believe he was born in Burnt Corn, Conecuh County, AL on 18 Jan 1836.

I would like information about his company and regiment, where he fought, etc. I am also seeking information and documentation about his parents, etc.
