I would believe the initials "P. A." stand for Provisional Army [Confederate States as in P. A. C. S.]

Consider that upon turning around in the ditches, you FIND/FOUND your comrade wounded. That's the way I would read it.

His records, under James J. Lanford state that he died November 11, 1864 at Petersburg.
