There should be a few corrections and clarifications. First, the "Pearson Dragoons" mustered under Capt. John G. Stokes at Montgomery, Ala., Nov. 25, 1861. During much of 1862 this command served as Co. "D", 1st Alabama Cavalry Regiment. When the regiment reorganized about Nov. 28, 1862, ther original ten companies merged into six. Captain Fitzpatrick’s men from Tallapoosa County became 2nd Company “C”, serving as such from late 1862 until the early months of 1864. At that time the regiment reorganized yet again, forming with nine companies under their original letter designations.

The 1st Alabama Cavalry Regiment surrendered at Charlotte NC, May 3, 1865, 72 officers and men signing paroles. Here is a list of company commanders --

Co. "A", Sgt. A. Lamons
Co. "B", 1st Lieut. William S. Warrock
Co. "D", Capt. Henry C. Washburn
Co. "E", 2nd Lieut. James M. Smith
Co. "F", 2nd Lieut. Neal B. Shaw
Co. "G", 2nd Lieut. W. C. C. Foster
Cos. "H" and "K", Capt. Bolling Kavanaugh
Co. "I", Capt. Robert A. Allen

Lieutenant (not Captain) Smith commanded General Allen's escort company. His company included forty officers and men, over half the number present in this regiment at the surrender. The "Pearson Dragoons" served as 1st Company "D", 2nd Company "C" and finally 3rd Company "D".

Finally, the service file for William R. Pitts gives his rank as CPL, not SGT. Cpl. Pitts was captured at Big Shanty, Ga., June 15, 1864, imprisoned at Rock Island, Ill., and released on exchange at Boulware's Wharf near City Point, Va., Mar. 5, 1865.
