The 1860 census shows William B. Gilliland, age 35, as a farmer in the eastern division of Marshall County. Ancestry.com shows him at the Camp of Instruction in Talledega, indicating that he was likely a conscript. Since Co. E was formed mostly of men from the section of Calhoun County that is now Cleburne County, that would square with him being conscripted and then assigned where he was needed.
