In 1863 bounties of $100 were offered by the Federal government to entice Alabama men to join the First Alabama Cavalry, USA. However, none of the men who enrolled under this agreement were ever paid. After the war, the government determined these men were simply refugees and thus, not entitled to the bounty money.
