Re: J.D. Callaway (Oates 15th Alabama)

Bullock County did not exist in 1860. This man appears on the 1860 census as Daniel Callaway, age 20, a resident of Midway, Barbour County. He is listed as a medical student, living in the household of Dr. J. W. Bledsoe and next door to Dr. W. G. Drake. It is quite possible that Calloway became a student without enrolling in medical school. John A. Wyeth, author of That Devil Forrest, became a physician without attending school. He later reconsidered, completed medical school, and returned to medical practice.
