Evidently Capt. Thomas J. White's mail guard organized as a mounted company and served as part of the 10th Alabama Cavalry. From that standpoint it didn't matter what your political sentiment hapened to be.

As mentioned before, Winston County supported the Southern Rights ticket in the election of 1860, while ardent Unionists by the bushel became secessionists between early 1860 and late 1861. After the war political lines hardened due to military defeat, occupation and hard times which never seemed to ease up any.
