All of the message boards have the same advertisement at the top which should help you. Unfortunately no one seems to read it.

The service file will show that Robert Atwell was a member of Forrest's (later McDonald's) Tennessee Cavalry Battalion. He was captured at Paducah KY, Dec. 7, 1863. Telling his captors at Rock Island Prison he believed the rebellion to be wrong, Atwell volunteered for service in the U.S. Navy on May 23, 1864.
