There was a Lt. Col. Lemuel D. Hatch who commanded a nine company battalion known as Hatch's 9th Cavalry Battalion, Local Defense Troops. In April 1864 another company was added and it became the 8th Alabama Cavalry, but command was given to Col. Elias P. Ball. I don't see a Stubbs in the unit, however.
