The census for 1850 lists James W. Stubbs, born 1848 and living in Marengo County. In 1860 he listed with older brother Thomas J. Stubbs, a future University of Alabama cadet in the household of Zara Stubbs, a Marengo County planter.

The census for Norfolk VA lists this man in 1920 and 1930, both showing his year of birth as being 1848. It is possible that he served in this regiment during late 1864 or early 1865, but there are no records under his name.
