During the fall of 1861 there was some talk of organizing a legion for Brig. Gen. Leroy Pope Walker, former Secretary of War. Component companies formed this battalion and the 19th Alabama Regiment. Very few cavalry and artillery companies organized during 1861, so it didn't seem reasonable to form a legion.
