The Alabama in the Civil War Message Board

His military service file ends upon taking roll for his company at the end of April 1863. In the image, probably taken before enrolling in Confederate service, Hanks appears to be wearing a regulation AVC uniform. The State of Alabama issued regulations for AVC uniforms in March 1860, a year before Lincoln's inauguration. These were practically word for word the same as contemporary U.S. military regualtions, but the AVC had their own buttons and belt buckles. Several AVC companies organized in Perry County before the war began, but I don't have access to my list at the moment.
