John Wesley Friend was not assigned to an artillery command. His service file as a Confederate officer includes an appointed as 2nd Lieutenant of Artillery, March 8, 1865, to rank from Jan. 7, 1865. He surrendered as assistant ordnance officer, 3rd Corps ANVa, Apr. 9, 1865. A note dated Dec. 17, 1864, lists him as acting 2nd Lieut. and asst. chief ordnance officer, 3rd Corps ANVa.
