Steve,
The 23rd Alabama, particularly Co. A and Co. E, was the subject of a program at the Monroeville SCV Camp 1610 last year. One of our guests was a direct descendant of William Howell Hanks. He is Ernest Hanks of Range in Conecuh County. You stated that Wm. H. Hanks is buried at Bethel West Cemetery. I believe he has a memorial marker there but is actually buried near Port Gibson. This, according to the Hanks family from Range.
