Re: Monroe Guards, 5th Alabama Infantry

Not much data available locally. Captain Thomas Mercer Riley is buried at Turnbull Cemetery south of Riley's Crossing (intersection of Alabama 21 and Alabama 47 just east of Beatrice). His home stands in disrepair approx. 1/4 miles north of the intersection.
The Monroe Guards were formed at Pineville (NE corner of present day Beatrice). Many men are recorded enlisted from March 15 to March 21, 1861. Captain Riley was 3rd Lt. in the original roster. I am seeking the original roster to learn the first Captain. As you know, a company of the 5th was formed in Clarke and enlisted men from several counties. Likewise, men from Wilcox joined the Monroe Guards. Good luck, our local history museum has little data on the affairs of Confederates. We do, however, have a monument to the Yankee raid of Monroeville by Lucas in April 1865. The museum director was a Yankee.
