Re: Monroe Guards, 5th Alabama Infantry

The Goode brothers were half brothers, sons of Major Garland Goode. The military role of Major Garland Goode is a mystery to those of us in Monroe County with an interest in such matters. The men who transferred to Co. D, 2nd Ala. Lt. Artillery Bn. (more commonly known in Monroe as Leslie's Flying Artillery, later, upon entry into service, Sengstak's Battery, and still later, Barrett's Missouri Battery) were from the Claiborne and Perdue Hill area of west Monroe County while most of the remaining Monroe Guards were from the Pineville and Midway area in NE Monroe County. The man who formed the artillery battery was W.P. Leslie, a lawyer at Claiborne who lived at Perdue Hill. The role of the Monroe Guards in Monroe before entry into service is not well recorded.
