He has records in two organizations, some 50 cards with the 12th Alabama and 2 with the Local defense unit. These may be procured through the service noted in the Red enclosed box above.

John C. Brown, Captain, Capt. Brown's Company of the Coffee County Rangers, Alabama Vols.,* enlisted May 23, 1861 in Coffee County, Alabama, prompted Major November 9, 1861, resigned March 6,1862, his file contains correspondence from the U.S. War Department, re his service, to the Director, Department of Archives & History, State of Alabama, dated March 8, 1916, also within his file are a number of requisitions for commissary supplies, fodder, etc. of May, 1864 in the 8th Comy? District at Depot ??? for Capt. H. C. Hart, signing as Capt. Commanding Co. [no identification]

* This company subsequently became Company D, 12th Regiment Alabama Infantry

BARBIERE'S RESERVE CAVALRY

Barbiere's reserve cavalry consisted of six companies under the
command of Maj. Joseph Barbiere, and served principally in
central Alabama during the fall and winter.

Barbiere's Battalion Alabama Cavalry appears to have been formed of independent companies which had been organized for local defense and were serving with the Alabama Reserves.

**Roll bears the following endorsement:

"Adj. G.:

"Give order that these men may be mustered in but the company be not considered fully complete till the complement of 64, to be raised from non-conscripts or disabled men, be obtained & be subject to service in the State on conscript duty & under the general direction till further orders of the commandant of conscripts in Ala.

" 24 Nov., '63 J. A. Seddon, Secy. of W."
