This is an instance in which War Department clerks made a mistake. Capt. Brown's company never had any association with Barbiere's Battalion. The latter eventually had as few as eight and as many of eleven-twelve companies assigned to him, but Brown's was not among them.

Barbiere's Cavalry Battalion organized during October 1864 at Talladega and served in central and northeast Alabama. John C. Brown's company organized at Elba, Spet. 25, 1863, and served along the Florida line and the eastern shore of Mobile.
