Re: Gravel Hill, March 24, 1865
Gravel Hill was also known as Gravella. Today, it is called Owassa and the rail crossing is located 1/2 mile east of I-65 and north of Evergreen in Conecuh County. The old road from Evergreen to Greenville crosses the rail line at this point. (today CR 29). Spurlin received the Medal of Honor for an engagement at Evergreen... (according to local historian A.D. Clark, deceased, the act of heroics involved an elderly farmer named McCreary who was shot dead for defending his personal property (a wagon laden with corn) at the former site of O.B. Salter's store located at the present day intersection of US 84 and US 31) Some of those wounded in the rail capture were taken to the Hawthorne house at Belleville.
