Here is a capsule of what I have found thus far. JCB was born in AL in June, 1833. He is listed as a merchant in the 1860-1880 censuses in Coffee Co. AL. First married M. Jewitt (possibly Thurman), and had three children Samuel H., Ernest, and John C. Second marriage (Washington Co., FL) on 1-3-1887 to Elizabeth Evans. Children were Rosa, Fox, and Mary L. Died 3-7-1902 @ Holmes Co., FL. Wife applied for Florida pension in 1923. Military Record - Joined a company which became Co, D, 12th AL Infantry. Elected major, but apparently not re-elected at reorganization in 1862. Came home and joined a cavalry company - one source says it was part of Barbiere's Battalion, hunting deserters. Another source say the Barbiere Battalion attribution is a mistake. It was actually Local Defense, Confederate Guards. Deserters were a major source of trouble for the So. AL/W FL area, and you had to be a hard man to deal with their depredation. Surrendered @ Montgomery in May, 1865. Hope this helps. Zack
